The Mayne Island Local Trust Committee gave first and second readings to a housing agreement bylaw for the Mayne Island Housing Society project, and scheduled a community information meeting for October 24 and a public hearing for October 31. The agreement and covenant are expected to be part of the public hearing process, Chair Dan Rogers said.[1]

The committee also asked staff to speak with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure about surface-water concerns flowing from Mount Parke onto the proposed housing site, and report back before October 24.[1]

At the meeting, Mayne Island Housing Society representative Dan Brown said the society planned to develop with the least possible impact and improve the water situation, and that the housing agreement was designed to meet project and funding requirements for affordable housing.[1]

Residents raised concerns about water runoff, wells, the site and the proposed rents. Planner Narissa Chadwick said the agreement’s rental rates were flexible, with the average of the rates to be 30% of average incomes in each income category.[1]

The committee accepted the draft housing agreement and designated its chair to sign it after adoption of the bylaw. It also asked staff to investigate an easement for Lot 2 in the covenant.[1]
