The applicant for the Oceanwood rezoning must consult surrounding neighbours, hold a Community Information Meeting and report feedback to the Mayne Island Local Trust Committee before the application proceeds further, under a committee motion carried September 25.[1]

The committee also asked the applicant to identify additional options for an amenity contribution and water management, and to explore the site’s archaeological potential.[1]

During discussion, the committee said it was too early to decline the application and encouraged the applicant to host a community meeting. It said the existing water plan would not be approved at the provincial or Trust Council level, and that the applicant would need to meet with the water association and develop a plan addressing community concerns about water use.[1]

The minutes say the applicants were planning water catchment and considering desalination. They described the barn as a possible community space with a commercial kitchen and café or restaurant, and said they were interested in staff housing; the minutes also record that the property owners said they had no intention of providing affordable housing on the property.[1]

At town hall, one speaker said the application mentioned staff housing but needed clarification about whether it would be for Oceanwood employees or the general population. Another speaker said affordable housing could be explored as an amenity and urged the committee not to reject the application at an early stage.[1]
