Mayne trustees back next phase of housing work
The committee supported a draft action plan and project charter, with a community forum on land-sharing options targeted for October.

The Mayne Island Local Trust Committee supported moving ahead with Phase 2 of its Housing Options Project, which will examine land-use changes to expand housing choices and opportunities for non-profit and government housing. Staff’s report said the work would include bylaw and Official Community Plan amendments, First Nations engagement and public outreach.[1]
The committee discussed a community forum on ways to share land for housing, including options beyond subdivision. The meeting transcript records October as a target for the forum, with possible speakers and participation from other Southern Gulf Islands also discussed.[2]
The staff report recommended endorsing the project charter and Housing Action Plan, and asking staff to organize a community information meeting focused on non-profit housing. It said the plan prioritizes increasing opportunities for non-profit housing and includes actions related to secondary suites, accessory dwelling units and alternative housing.[1]
The transcript records trustees and staff discussing the plan’s water considerations, including groundwater, rainwater catchment and the need to consider freshwater sustainability as housing options are developed.[2]

The purpose of this project is to explore and implement Land Use Bylaw and Official Community Plan amendments that will expand opportunities to build secondary suites and accessory dwelling units, increase opportunities for not for profit and government organizations to build affordable and accessible housing, permit alternative housing approaches and reduce the ecological footprint of new builds.
