The Mayne Island Local Trust Committee approved a temporary use permit for winter storage of up to nine marine dock floats in Horton Bay, with the permit running from October 15, 2026 to April 15, 2028. [1]
The committee also referred the application to the Mayne Island Advisory Planning Commission for comment, including comment on the zoning of mooring buoys for Mayne Island. [1]
The applicant, representing ten Mayne Island property owners, said the floats have been stored in Horton Bay during winter for thirty years because summer mooring locations are unprotected from winter storms. [1]
The applicant said the floats would be moored 60 metres from the Anton Road dock and that a Transport Canada-requested light could be shielded from residences. [1]
During public participation, speakers raised concerns about the time taken for the application to return to the committee, the number of comments opposing it, liability, lighting, navigation allowances and winter marine traffic in Horton Bay. [1]
The committee recorded that lighting was not included in the permit terms because it was a potential Transport Canada requirement, and that the agency would establish guidelines for the lighting. [1]
